FAQs about Homeopathy

Although many people utilise homeopathy each year, it does not mean that everyone knows what the treatment is and what to expect during their treatment. We have answered some of the common questions patients might have when considering homeopathic treatment.

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a very effective, clinically proven form of medicine that offers relief for a wide range of illness and disease. It works by understanding that the symptoms of ill health are actually signs of the body healing itself.

The symptoms are then treated with a homeopathic medicine that stimulates this self-healing. For example a sore throat or a fever indicates that the body is fighting infection; homeopathic medicines are able to boost this self-healing ability to enable full recovery to occur.

How can homeopathy help me?

Homeopathy can improve your mental outlook on life, increase your energy level, focus your thoughts to improve your quality of life, control your emotions and improve physical health. Homeopathy accomplishes this by:

  • Providing active support through the process of recovery by a professional who is accessible at all times and who works hard to advance the best health interest of the patient.
  • Using homeopathic medicines alongside prescribed drugs to achieve better outcomes from conventional treatment.
  • Treating with medicines that do not have the potential to cause side effects and yet are able to deal with their health problems effectively.
  • Offering a safe alternative to taking over the counter medicine for acute conditions such as colds, headaches, hangovers, hay fever, coughs, period pains etc. Patients are able to keep a ‘homeopathic first aid kit’ at home to deal with these problems without needing to use drugs.
  • Treating children with a safe form of medicine they know they can trust and that is gentle and effective. Patients also know that their homeopath is going to be on the end of the phone to help when their child is ill.
  • Alleviating uncomfortable symptoms in chronic health conditions
  • Dealing with the underlying cause of an illness, rather than masking it with drugs that palliate the problems temporarily but do not address the cause.
  • Providing treatment that has a substantial base of scientific evidence behind it. For further information please look at www.homeopathy-soh.org/whats-new/research

The benefits of homeopathy include more than just relief from a particular condition. Patients find that it leads to increased energy levels, better appetite and sleep as well as an enhanced sense of well-being.

Is homeopathic treatment safe?

Homeopathic remedies are safe, because they either don’t contain any chemically-active ingredients or these are only present in very low concentrations.

What happens during my first consultation?

Establishing good health involves treating everyone as an individual, so time is taken to listen and understand thoroughly what is happening to each patient. First appointments are therefore an hour and a half long, so a full health history can be taken and a treatment plan be decided on.

What happens during a follow-up consultation?

The first follow up consultation will usually be around four weeks after the first prescription, although in some cases it may be sooner. The session will be shorter, and the homeopath will ask about changes that have occurred, using their detailed notes as a reference point, before deciding on the next course of treatment.

The number of consultations needed is difficult to predict – it depends on a number of factors such as the age of the patient, how long the symptoms have been going on and their individual response to the prescription.

How long does treatment usually take?

Treatment times vary depending on the individual. This is normally followed up with hour long appointments every four to six weeks until you are well. Once patients are well they usually only need to return occasionally to deal with any issues that may arise in the future.

What are the after-effects?

You may find that after taking a homeopathic treatment, your symptoms get worse for a short period of time before they get better. Some homeopaths believe this is part of the healing reaction and that it may be a necessary part of the healing process.
